Unidos da Tijuca are Rio Carnival 2010 champions

February 18th, 2010

To the surprise of most of us, Unidos da Tijuca (which reads something like “Tijuca United” – Tijuca is a neighborhood in Rio westside) are crowned champions of Rio Carnival 2010, after a very very long wait (their last and only title was in 1936).

Yes, it was a surprise. Whoever watched the parade on the first day was certainly touched by the remarkable performance, which we considered the main highlight of the spectacle here at Carnival Rio. Their theme, “secrets”, featured lots of beautiful cars and costumes, like Mafia boys, Michael Jackson, heroes and others. A performance that made Unidos da Tijuca one of the main contenders, one that made the public love them. A deserved title for an outlier.

Watch the champions performance below!

Videos and pictures of Rio Carnival 2010 parade

February 15th, 2010

Rio Carnival parades have just started last night with some of the favorites showing their fancy cars and allegories in high style. A particular highlight was shown by Unidos da Tijuca, one of the main contenders, which has bringen in some secrets to be revealed only during the parade, having performers changing their clothes right on the ground. Unidos da Tijuca also paid a homage to Michael Jackson and showed an Italian mob section, something that appeals to americans in particular.

If you are mexican, Viradouro has also paid a homage to you. Diego Rivera performed in this parade dedicated to the mexican people. Other highlights are Beija Flor – who told the story of Brasilia, the 1960-founded capital city of Brazil, a grandiouse, monumental planned town that today is home to more than 2 million people – and Salgueiro, the current champion, who had books in general as the main theme.

Highlights in portuguese in the video below. You can see more videos, pics and a special report on Rio Carnival here. Click here for a Google translation to english.

Carnival History in Brazil – what is the origin of the Carnival?

July 15th, 2009

The carnival is considered one of the most popular festivals of the world lively and representative. Has its origin in Shrovetide Portuguese, where in the past, people playing in the other one, water, eggs and flour. The Shrovetide happened in a period before Lent, and therefore had a significance related to freedom. This effect remains until today in the days of Carnival.

The Shrovetide came to Brazil around the seventeenth century and was influenced by the carnival celebrations that happen in Europe. In countries like Italy and France, occurred in the carnival parades of urban forms, where the carnival masks and costumes used. Celebrities such as Colombina, the King Momo pierre and were also incorporated into the Brazilian carnival, but are of European origin.

In Brazil, the end of the nineteenth century, began to appear the first carnival blocks, strings and the famous “Corsican.” They have become more popular in the beginning of XX centuries. People disguise, decorated their cars and in groups, parade through the streets of cities. Ai is the origin of floats, typical of the samba schools of today.

In the twentieth century, the carnival has been growing and becoming increasingly a popular party. This growth occurred with the help of marchinhas carnival. The songs leave the carnival increasingly animated.

The first came on the samba school of Rio de Janeiro and was called Lets Talk. Was created by carioca Snowbunny called Ismael Silva. Years later the Talk It has become the school of samba Estácio de Sá. From then on the street carnival begins to gain a new format. Beginning to emerge new schools of samba in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Organized into leagues of Schools of Samba, the first league start to see what the samba school was more beautiful and lively.

Carnival is the largest popular festival in Brazil – Rio de Janeiro – RJ

May 12th, 2009

The Carnival is the largest popular festival in Brazil, the carnival of Rio de Janeiro the most rich and famous, attracting thousands of national and foreign tourists.

Every year during the Carnival, the city of Rio de Janeiro breathe for five days an enviable air of joy. Cariocas forget the problems and obligations and yield to the gigantic spectacle of dance and magic. The peak of the festival is the parade of the panel in the Marquis of Sapucaí where various Samba schools compete among themselves the title of Carnival champion. Samba, vivid colors, beautiful costumes and beautiful women are the main ingredients of this great dispute.

The date of the Carnival varies from year to year depending on Easter. Usually the revelry occurs between the end of February and first days of March. The official start of carnival is always on a Saturday and end at noon on the Wednesday following, called “Ash Wednesday”. However many people have already started the celebrations on Friday. It is much in Brazil that year formally begins only after the Carnival.

During most of the nineties, was reduced to the carnival parades of samba schools and the great dances in clubs closed. The famous and traditional “street carnival”, where people spontaneously playing without paying entry, dropped out. In recent years, however, this form of celebration is being recovered.

The Carnival has several possible sources that lead to thousands of years before Christ. The word carnival may have its origin in the Latin expression “carrum Novalis’ used by the Romans to open their celebrations. Or perhaps the word “carnelevale” which means “farewell to meat” in Milanese dialect, a reference to the beginning of Christian Lent.

Unlike the carnival that existed elsewhere in Europe (and now disappeared), the carnival was held in Portugal’s play dirty with all possible people, especially food. This was the carnival led to their colony, including Brazil.

In the middle of the nineteenth century began to emerge dances, strip clubs and large carnival, not only for parties met. At the beginning of the twentieth century, beginning to realize that fashion with blocks, little by little, were gaining size giving rise to the samba schools that exist today and form the Rio carnival.

Founded in the neighborhood of Estácio in 1928, the Let Talk was the first one. In 1932 was the first non-official parade in 1935 and was the first official parade in the square Eleven June. A Praça Onze was destroyed and the place of the parade was changed several times. In 1984, however, was built to Passarela Samba, local parades for the final. More known as Sambadrome, the site was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is length of 700 meters, 85 square meters and capacity for 600 thousand people, divided into several sectors.

For over 30 years, the parade of schools was carried out spontaneously. Only in 1963 began to sell seats for the public. Today, the Rio Carnival is one of the largest pride of Rio de Janeiro and is responsible for large investments. Are tickets, advertising, CDs, television rights, etc.. The moon of the title of Carnival champion is much disputed and involves high costs and great need for labor, creating jobs for the communities of each school of samba. Portela, Salgueiro, Mangueira, Império Serrano, Beija-Flor and Imperatriz Leopoldinense are among the most traditional schools, who work the entire year for Carnival.
